The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reveals that the Indian population in Australia increased by 30 percent between 2016 and 2018. In June 2016, Indians living in Australia was 455,389, as per Census 2016. The population number increased to 592,000 by June 2018. The data is revealed by the preliminary calculations of ABS.
The Indian population is now the 3rd biggest community in Australia moving New Zealand born to the fourth position. The Population of Indian migrants constitutes 2.4 percent of the Australian population, and the average of Indian migrants is 34 years, the equivalent age as that of residents born in Australia.
Indians are the largest Australian PR visa holders
Indians coming to Australia are the biggest migrant source since 2016. In 2016 and 2017, Australia set immigration levels at 183,608 out of which 38,854 were allotted to Indians. In 2017-18, the PR visas number announced by Australia was 162,417 and Indian population received 33,310 visas.
The students of Indian origin also reached a high percentage in the year 2018. As per the data, approximately 70,000 students were studying in Universities and colleges in Australia in the month of November 2017.
